The Avs/Sharks and Canes/Islanders get underway tonight in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
We won’t hesitate to get involved in San Jose with an angle we quite like.
To say the first round went well would be an understatement. Hopefully, that positive momentum continues tonight as we kick off our second round action.
We also have an opinion in the Canes/Islanders tilt (for Site Supporters only), a game we won’t be involved in personally. But if you agree with our position, maybe you will be…
Odds below are at the time we made the pick.
Good luck tonight!

Last night, we saw the downside of wrapping up a series win early as the Blue Jackets were dominated early in their Round 2 series opener versus Boston. Playing their first game in more than a week after sweeping the Lightning in Round 1, the Jackets were outshot 14-4 in the first period by a Bruins team that had played a Game 7 against Toronto just a couple of nights earlier. Columbus found its stride in the second period and even managed to take a 2-1 lead in the third, but it seems clear — and makes sense — that the opening 20 minutes are going to be difficult for a team playing with that much rest.
Colorado’s in a similar position tonight, having not played since finishing off a 4-1 Round 1 over the Flames on April 19. Having too much rest hasn’t been a good thing for the Avs, who have won just 1 of their 8 games this season when playing their first game in 3 days or more. Meanwhile, the Sharks are in a similar spot to what Boston was last night, coming off a Game 7 win two nights ago. San Jose’s victory over the Golden Knights was certainly more dramatic and emotionally draining than the Bruins’ win over the Leafs, but it could also act as a springboard towards a fast start tonight.
We’ve written before about how the Sharks tend to start fast in their own rink anyway. The first period has been San Jose’s best on home ice all year (outscoring opponents 52-42 and going into the first intermission either ahead or tied in 30 of 41 home dates). Meanwhile, the Avs have had the lead after 20 minutes in just 14 of their 41 road outings this year, getting outshot 429-402 in the opening frame in enemy territory.
The first period moneyline allows us to back the Sharks in what’s been their best period at home, fade the Avs in what’s been their worst period on the road, and exploit the potential for Colorado to be rusty early — all at a shorter price than the full game moneyline. Let’s hope it pays off.
