NHL Betting Tips For Thursday, October 13

Jon and DerekWhat an incredible opening night that was in the NHL!

First, you had Auston Matthews lighting up the Senators for 4 goals in the first 2 periods of his NHL debut. Unfortunately for the Leafs, he needed to score 5 as they still lost the game 5-4 in overtime.

Then out west, Connor McDavid put on a show of his own, scoring twice and adding an assist as the Oilers christened their new arena with a 7-4 win over the Flames. We had Calgary +120 in that game and they outshot Edmonton 41-28, but Brian Elliott was really bad in his first game in net for the Flames. Something about the Calgary jersey automatically turns goalies into sieves.

Other action saw the Blues dominate the Blackhawks in Chicago, winning 5-2, and the Sharks rallying from an early deficit to edge the Kings 2-1. We had San Jose -130 in that one, so we finished the night 1-1 for a small loss.

There are 9 games scheduled for tonight as 17 other teams see their first action of the season. We’re involved in 2 of those games.

Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.

Bruins Logo VS Pick Blue Jackets Logo
Game: Bruins @ Blue Jackets
Time: 7:00PM ET
Pick: Over 5.5 +114 (5Dimes)

Boston’s already pretty suspect defensively this season and now they open the year not only without two defencemen, but also without one of the league’s best defensive forwards in Patrice Bergeron. The Blue Jackets typically play higher-scoring games on home ice, and they’re not exactly a defensive powerhouse either. We saw plenty of goals last night on the opening night of the season, where defensive intensity isn’t usually at the max for clubs playing their first games of the season. At plus money, we like the chances of 6 or more goals in this one.
