NHL Betting Tips For Saturday, October 7

Jon and DerekAn unpredictable start to the NHL season continued last night as the Golden Knights rallied for 2 late goals to beat the Stars in Dallas, the first-ever win for the Vegas franchise.

From Colorado winning in New York to the Blackhawks putting up 10 goals against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, we’ve already seen some pretty weird stuff, and we’re just 3 days into the NHL season.

Until these teams have a few games under their belts and some tendencies start to emerge about their play, we’re going to continue to wait before making any more official wagers.

However, if you’re looking for some action tonight, we suggest a parlay of the Coyotes and Penguins. Both are priced a bit higher than the picks we usually post on here (usually top out at -150), but if you parlay those two together, you can get a return of around +150. Pittsburgh’s in a good situational spot coming off a humiliating loss, while we think the Knights could let down emotionally after last night’s big win. The Islanders are also a play worth considering, coming a 5-0 loss last night in Columbus.

Following is a breakdown of the entire 15-game board in the NHL tonight. If you’re a new follower to the site this year, the breakdowns and analysis will get more extensive once each team has played a few games and there’s more data to look at.

Good luck tonight!

Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.

Avalanche Logo VS Pick Devils Logo
Game: Avalanche @ Devils
Time: 2:00PM ET

Colorado upset the Rangers 4-2 Thursday at Madison Square Garden, but the Avs were still outshot 39-26 on the night and saw a 2-0 first-period lead quickly evaporate. New Jersey is playing its first game of the season and should be better offensively this year after signing Marcus Johansson and drafting Nico Hischier. We’d like to see the Devils in action before betting on any of their games.

Other things to know:

  • The Under is 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings in New Jersey and 18-5-4 in the last 27 overall
  • Colorado has won 16 of the last 22 meetings
Red Wings Logo VS Pick Senators Logo
Game: Red Wings @ Senators
Time: 7:00PM ET

This could be an early-season letdown spot for Detroit after the Red Wings opened up their new rink with a 4-2 upset of the Wild on Thursday. Ottawa blew a 3-1 third-period lead Thursday in a 5-4 shootout loss at home to Washington, when the Sens were 0 for 5 on the power play. We lean slightly to the Under here as Ottawa should try to get back to defensive-minded hockey.

Other things to know:

  • Detroit has won 6 of the last 8 meetings, and 8 of its last 11 visits to Ottawa
  • 4 of the last 7 meetings were decided in overtime
  • Ottawa has scored 2 regulation time goals or less in 5 of the last 6 meetings
  • Karlsson is questionable for Ottawa
  • Kronwall is questionable for Detroit
Lightning Logo VS Pick Panthers Logo
Game: Lightning @ Panthers
Time: 7:00PM ET

Tampa beat the Panthers 5-3 last night, marking the fifth straight time and 8th in the last 9 meetings that the home team has prevailed in this in-state rivalry. Florida outshot the Lightning 36-25 and battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game going into the third period. It looks like a good spot to back the Panthers here.

Other things to know:

  • Florida has scored 3+ goals in 5 of the last 7 meetings
  • Tampa has scored a total of 4 goals in its last 4 trips to Florida
Predators Logo VS Pick Penguins Logo
Game: Predators @ Penguins
Time: 7:00PM ET

Nice to already get a rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup final, and the Predators will be motivated to avenge their loss in that series to the Penguins. But Pittsburgh is in a bounceback spot of its own, looking to right the ship after being embarrassed 10-1 Thursday in Chicago and falling to 0-1-1. The Penguins beat the Sharks in an early-season Cup final rematch last year in Pittsburgh, and we strongly lean to the Pens to take down the Predators here as well.

Other things to know:

  • Pittsburgh has won 5 straight home games versus Nashville
  • The home team has won 8 of the last 9 meetings
  • Pittsburgh has won 12 of the last 16 meetings
  • Pittsburgh has won 22 of its last 30 games following a loss of 3+ goals
Rangers Logo VS Pick Leafs Logo
Game: Rangers @ Leafs
Time: 7:00PM ET

New York was the best road team in the NHL last year and looks to rebound from Thursday’s 4-2 loss at home to Colorado. Toronto whipped the Jets 7-2 on opening night in Winnipeg, when the Leafs were outshot 37-31 but successfully killed off 8 penalties. These teams have a history of playing high-scoring games and in what should be a high-energy environment for Toronto’s home opener, we lean to the Over in this one as well.

Other things to know:

  • New York has won its last 4 visits to Toronto, and 6 of 7 meetings overall
  • The Over is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in Toronto, and 13-6-1 in the last 20 meetings overall
Canadiens Logo VS Pick Capitals Logo
Game: Canadiens @ Capitals
Time: 7:00PM ET

Each of these teams opened their season Thursday with shootout victories on the road. Washington may not be that pleased with its defensive effort after allowing 4 goals in Ottawa and having to come back in the third period, but Alex Ovechkin looked pretty good in recording a hat trick and then scoring again in the shootout. Montreal’s best chance to win this one is to keep things low scoring and try to steal it at the end. We like the Under here.

Other things to know:

  • Montreal has won 5 of its last 7 visits to Washington
  • The road team has won 21 of the last 28 meetings
  • Montreal has scored 2 goals or less in 5 of the last 6 meetings and 7 of the last 9
  • The Under is 18-4-4 in the last 26 meetings, and 16-5-5 in the last 26 in Washington
Sabres Logo VS Pick Islanders Logo
Game: Sabres @ Islanders
Time: 7:00PM ET

The Islanders should bring some energy early in their home opener, one night after an embarrassing 5-0 loss in Columbus. The Sabres recorded 46 shots on goal Thursday at home to Montreal but still lost 3-2 in a shootout. At around -125 odds, the Islanders are worth strong consideration in a bounceback spot.

Other things to know:

  • Buffalo has scored 2 regulation time goals or less in 7 of the last 8 meetings
  • The visiting team has earned at least one point in 8 of the last 10 meetings
Wild Logo VS Pick Hurricanes Logo
Game: Wild @ Hurricanes
Time: 7:00PM ET

First game of the season for the Hurricanes, who many expect (and we agree) to be a strong contender for a playoff spot in the East this season. Minnesota is coming off a 4-2 loss Thursday in Detroit and should be completely focused here with 4 days off coming up. We initially leaned slightly to the Wild coming off a loss, but Minnesota is starting backup Alex Stalock instead of Devan Dubnyk tonight.

Other things to know:

  • Parise and Granlund are out for Minnesota
  • Minnesota has won 7 of the last 8 meetings
  • The home team is 14-5-1 in the last 20 meetings
  • Minnesota has scored 3+ goals in 8 of the last 9 meetings
Stars Logo VS Pick Blues Logo
Game: Stars @ Blues
Time: 8:00PM ET

It’s revenge time for Stars coach Ken Hitchcock, who the Blues fired midway through last season. Dallas blew a late lead to lose at home last night to Vegas while St. Louis has been off since a 5-4 OT win to start the year in Pittsburgh but remains without Alex Steen, Jay Bouwmeester and others.

Other things to know:

  • St. Louis has scored 2+ goals in 10 straight meetings against Dallas, and 3+ in 7 of 10
  • The Over is 6-1-3 in the last 10 meetings
  • Dallas has lost 6 of the last 8 meetings
Blue Jackets Logo VS Pick Blackhawks Logo
Game: Blue Jackets @ Blackhawks
Time: 8:30PM ET

Both teams filled the net in their season openers as Chicago blasted Pittsburgh 10-1 Thursday and the Blue Jackets hammered the Islanders 5-0 last night. We’ll lean to the Over here because of that, especially if Bobrovsky gets the night off on the tail end of a back to back.

Other things to know:

  • The home team has lost in regulation time just twice in the last 10 meetings
  • Columbus has lost 8 of its last 9 trips to Chicago
  • The Over is 37-18 in the last 55 meetings
Golden Knights Logo VS Pick Coyotes Logo
Game: Golden Knights @ Coyotes
Time: 9:00PM ET

After coming back in the third period to win their first-ever game last night, we’re nervous about the potential here for a letdown by the Golden Knights. And though Arizona blew a 3-goal lead in its season-opening loss to Anaheim on Thursday, the Coyotes did score 4 goals in that game and should bring lots of energy to the rink tonight in their home debut.

Jets Logo VS Pick Flames Logo
Game: Jets @ Flames
Time: 10:00PM ET

Winnipeg was humiliated 7-2 at home Wednesday in its season opener, while the Flames were outshot 45-26 in a 3-0 loss in Edmonton. We like Calgary to win the game, but the price is a bit too steep for our liking against a Jets team that should bring a much better effort.

Other things to know:

  • The home team has won 18 of the last 25 meetings
  • Winnipeg has lost its last 4 visits to Calgary
  • Winnipeg has scored 2 goals or less in 5 straight meetings and 7 of the last 9
Flyers Logo VS Pick Ducks Logo
Game: Flyers @ Ducks
Time: 10:00PM ET

Anaheim staged an impressive comeback victory on Thursday, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Coyotes 5-4 despite being without Getzlaf, Lindholm, Kesler, Eaves and a couple of other regulars. Philadelphia lost 2-0 Thursday in LA on the second night of a back to back, but outshot the Kings 35-27. We see more reasons not to bet either of these teams than reasons to bet on either of them, so it’s an easy pass.

Other things to know:

  • The Over is 5-0-2 in the last 7 meetings and 12-1 in the last 13 meetings in Anaheim
  • Philadelphia has lost 11 of its last 12 games in Anaheim
  • Philadelphia is playing its 3rd game in 4 nights
Oilers Logo VS Pick Canucks Logo
Game: Oilers @ Canucks
Time: 10:00PM ET

It’s the season opener for the Canucks, while Edmonton’s been off since a 3-0 win over Calgary on Wednesday. Vancouver could bring a little extra energy in the head coaching debut of Travis Green. That and the steep price is enough to keep us off the Oilers here.

Other things to know:

  • Edmonton has lost 15 of its last 21 visits to Vancouver
  • Vancouver has lost 14 of its last 16 home games
Kings Logo VS Pick Sharks Logo
Game: Kings @ Sharks
Time: 10:30PM ET

These southern California rivals have a long history of playing low-scoring, tightly-contested games. 8 of the last 9 games have seen 5 goals or less, and 7 of the last 9 were decided by 1 goal. San Jose will also want to tighten things up in its own end after allowing 5 goals in a season-opening loss to Philly on Wednesday. The Under is the only way to look here, in our opinion.

Other things to know:

  • The road team has won 11 of the last 15 meetings
  • San Jose has won 8 of the last 11 meetings
  • The Under is 27-12-9 in San Jose’s last 48 home games
  • The Under is 18-5-5 in Los Angeles’ last 28 road games

Good luck!
