It was a second straight great night of NHL hockey yesterday with 5 of the 9 games featuring 6 goals or more and several exciting comebacks.
We weren’t on the Jets/Hurricanes game but we caught the tail end of the third period and the overtime. Winnipeg rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third, tied the game with 1:29 left in regulation and won it on a beautiful goal by Scheifele in OT.
Our bets had a 1-1 split for the second straight evening, this time turning us a small profit as both our wagers were at plus money. The winner was on the Bruins/Blue Jackets Over 5.5, and the teams combined for 9 goals. Our loss was on the Wild, who was outplayed badly in the first period by the Blues and fell 3-2 in St. Louis.
Only 3 games on the NHL betting board tonight, and we’re going with 1 pick. Buckle up for tomorrow night as there’s a 13-game slate to enjoy.
Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.
Unfortunately this line has moved quite a bit since we posted this pick to our site earlier this afternoon, but even at the current -140 price we think there’s still value on the Flames. We love the spot for Calgary, returning home 2 days after opening the season with a 7-4 loss in Edmonton to the rival Oilers and getting a chance to avenge that loss tonight.
Calgary outshot the Oilers Wednesday night but Brian Elliott struggled in his debut, allowing 6 goals on 27 shots (Edmonton’s last goal was an empty netter). Elliott is a good goalie (led the NHL in save percentage last year) and has told the media he’s excited “to get an opportunity to redeem yourself, right back at it.”
Even though this is a fierce rivalry and just the second game of the season, this also looks like a possible letdown spot for the Oilers. Edmonton’s players obviously sensed the importance of winning the first game in Rogers Place Wednesday, especially with Gretzky and Messier and a lot of the other former Oiler greats in the building. They could be a bit fat and happy coming into this one, and we expect the Flames to come out with a lot more intensity early. Hopefully, that’s enough to get Calgary on its way in this one.
If you don’t want to lay -140 on the Flames here, you could also play them -1 on the puck line (Pinnacle is a sportsbook that offers these types of lines, or you could split your bet between the moneyline and -1.5 puck line), take them to win in regulation or play them over their team total of 2.5.
