We took the day off yesterday with just 2 games to choose from.
It’s that time of year when it’s good to be selective. There are a lot of teams in “must-win” mode and they’re generally overpriced. But there are also a lot of huge underdogs you can’t really rely on either, because many of them are just playing out the string.
For example, the Penguins are favoured as high as -280 tonight at Sports Interaction as they host the Devils. We don’t see how Pittsburgh should be laying that price against anybody, but are you really going to take the Devils? We leaned towards New Jersey +1.5 on the puck line (it’s just -130 at SIA) but chose to pass.
Other huge favourites tonight are the Ducks (-175 on the road), Predators (-280), Wild (-180) and Sharks (-210). Hard to bet on those teams at those prices, but also difficult to back the Leafs, Canucks, Flames or Oilers right now (sorry, fellow Canadians, but it’s true).
Instead of laying heavy chalk or shooting for big returns with huge dogs, we’re going with 3 picks tonight at relatively even odds.
Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.
We lost with the Kings the other night in Minnesota but they played the type of game we expected, holding Minnesota to 2 goals and outshooting the Wild 39-18. Now that LA has lost 2 in a row, we’ll look for a similar effort tonight in Winnipeg.
The Jets snapped a 3-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Canucks Tuesday but they’ve still scored just 5 goals in their last 4 games. The only team Winnipeg has beaten in its last 9 games other than Vancouver was the Avalanche, and the Jets allowed 37 shots in that game. LA should be able to get the job done in 60 minutes tonight.

We don’t see how the Avs are a home dog in this matchup. The Flyers have definitely been hot lately but they’re coming off a 3-2 loss in Columbus in which they allowed a whopping 53 shots. Philly shouldn’t have lost that game (they led 2-0 with a couple of minutes to go) but it’s not like they deserved to win, either.
Colorado has won 3 in a row and 5 of 6. They’re playing their first home game after a four-game road trip, which would ordinarily concern us, but this game has huge playoff implications for both teams so we expect Colorado to be focused. Add in the fact that the Avs have won their last 7 home games against Philly, and getting plus money on Colorado at home is too much to pass up.

Columbus showed some spark Tuesday in rallying from a late 2-0 deficit to beat the Flyers. And like we said above, they fired 53 shots at the Philly net. It’s not asking a lot for them to carry some momentum from that effort into tonight.
The playoff hopes are slipping away for Carolina with a 5-game winless streak. The Canes blew a late 2-1 lead at home to the Sabres Tuesday, and you can sense frustration setting in with the Carolina players. Visiting a Blue Jackets team that has won 6 of its last 9 at home isn’t necessarily going to cure anything.
