We enjoyed a great 2-0 night yesterday for +2.55 units as our underdog bets on the Islanders and Sharks both came through.
We made both of those bets based on value and would honestly have been happy if we’d split to make a small profit. But the Islanders and Sharks both overcame early deficits and took third-period leads, then held on.
We’re now 11-2-1 on our last 14 picks, and 3-0 in the playoffs.
Now that 7 of 8 series have begun, we feel it actually might be easier to handicap the various intangibles involved with playoff hockey. Anaheim and Nashville will open their series tonight, but the other matchups will see teams desperate to avoid an 0-2 series hole while their opponents look to apply an early chokehold.
We’re on 2 games for tonight’s action. We also lean to Detroit and the Blackhawks, but chose to pass. Good luck with your bets!
Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.
The first thing that jumps out about this matchup is the history of high-scoring games between these teams. Only 5 of their last 26 meetings have gone Under, and the Over is on a 9-0-1 run in the series.
We can’t just base a bet on a trend like that, so how about the fact that the Predators haven’t played a game with less than 5 goals scored since February 27! Nashville has a reputation as a hard-nosed defensive team but the Preds have been more wide open for a month and a half now. We think it’s fairly safe to expect 2 goals from Nashville tonight.
If Nashville gets 2, we like the Ducks’ odds to at least get to 3, which would guarantee us a push at worst. Anaheim is a pretty big favourite and deserves to be, based on how dominant the Ducks have been since Christmas. And even if the Ducks limit Nashville to a goal, Anaheim’s got more than enough firepower to get to 4, especially with the potential for a late empty-netter.

We took the Islanders yesterday in part because we thought the young Panthers might wilt a bit under the intense playoff spotlight. Florida played fairly well in Game 1 but did fall apart briefly when the Islanders tied the game late in the 2nd, allowing two early goals in the 3rd.
But now the pressure is really on the Florida players. A loss here means going on the road in an 0-2 hole, which isn’t a winning formula in the NHL playoffs. Sure, they’ll be desperate, but they also might be tight, especially if things don’t go their way early. And the short turnaround of playing 24 hours later helps the Islanders in our opinion, as last night’s game is still fresh in both teams’ minds.
We strongly considered taking the Islanders straight up tonight but we can see this game being a real catfight with potential of going to OT. By taking New York +0.5 in regulation (if your sportsbook doesn’t offer regulation time betting, you might be able to bet this on Double Chance instead), we can win if the game goes to overtime and not worry about what happens in the extra session.
