NHL Betting Tips For Tuesday, October 10

Jon and DerekWe moved to 2-0 on the year last night as the Calgary Flames snapped their 29-game losing streak in Anaheim with a 2-0 victory over the Ducks, cashing as +107 underdogs. (That pick was posted on Twitter and Facebook.)

Finally earning a victory in Anaheim, even if it was against a banged-up Ducks team, has to be a huge psychological lift for the Flames. It also had to feel pretty good to avenge last year’s first-round sweep at the hands of Anaheim, when inferior goaltending really did the Flames in.

Mike Smith is off to a great start in Calgary, posting a 1.68 goals-against average and .957 save percentage through 3 games. There’s no way he keeps up those numbers, but even decent goaltending could make the Flames a much more dangerous team in 2017-18.

We’ve got 1 bet for tonight as we continue to be a bit conservative until teams have played enough games to get a strong feel about their tendencies. If you’ve already read our article about why the Dallas Stars could be one of the best Under bets in hockey this year, you won’t be surprised by what we like tonight.

Below the Stars/Red Wings writeup are short breakdowns of the rest of tonight’s matchups, along with our leans on two of them. Good luck, and see you back here Thursday!

Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.

Game: Red Wings @ Stars Pick
Time: 8:30PM ET
Pick: Red Wings Team Total Under 2.5 -107 (Pinnacle)

The Stars come into this game at 0-2, but it’s one of the more misleading 0-2 records you’ll see. In Friday’s season opener, Dallas blasted 46 shots at Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury but fell 2-1. Saturday, with backup Kari Lehtonen in net, the Stars quickly fell behind 3-0 before outshooting the Blues 28-12 over the last two periods and 40-21 on the night in a 4-2 loss.

Ken Hitchcock’s already got his team playing a lot better defensively, it’s just hard to tell when Lehtonen is in net instead of Ben Bishop. Bishop carried a shutout past the midway point of the third period Friday before suffering a face injury, and Lehtonen gave up two quick goals in his place. Now that Bishop is back in net tonight, we like him and the improved Stars defence to handcuff a Detroit attack that was one of the NHL’s worst last year and didn’t do much to get better over the offseason.

The Wings’ 2-0 mark is pretty deceiving as well, considering that they were outshot 77-61 in those two victories. They should be pretty content to keep things at a slower pace tonight as well, knowing that they’re definitely overmatched in the skill department. Instead of laying the -160 moneyline price with the Stars or requiring them to win the game in regulation time, we’d rather have our money against Detroit getting 3 pucks past Bishop tonight.

Game: Senators @ Canucks Lean
Time: 10:00PM ET
Lean: Pass

Reasons to bet Ottawa: The Senators have won 4 of the last 5 meetings and are 2-1-2 in their last 5 trips to Vancouver. The Canucks have played just once and could let down a bit after Saturday’s 3-2 upset of Edmonton in their home opener.

Reasons to bet Vancouver: The Canucks have defeated Ottawa in 7 of their last 9 home games versus the Senators. Hoffman is questionable for the Sens, who remain winless in 2 games without Erik Karlsson.

Other things to know:

  • Vancouver was outshot 35-26 in its win over Edmonton on Saturday
  • The home team has won 5 of the last 6 meetings

Probable goalies: Anderson (confirmed), Markstrom

Coyotes Logo VS Pick Golden Knights Logo
Game: Coyotes @ Golden Knights Lean
Time: 10:00PM ET
Lean: Golden Knights -104

Reasons to bet Arizona: The Coyotes look to avenge a 2-1 OT loss to Vegas on Saturday, and back-to-back losses to a expansion franchise wouldn’t be a good look for an Arizona team that is supposed to be improved.

Reasons to bet Vegas: It’s the first home game in Golden Knights franchise history and should be an emotional scene following last week’s tragic mass shooting in Vegas. Arizona has been outshot 73-58 in its first 2 games, while Vegas has allowed 1 goal in each of its first 2 games.

Probable goalies: Raanta (confirmed), Fleury
