Nice easy winner on the Sabres/Oilers Over 5.5 yesterday, as the teams combined for 8 goals.
It was a bit surprising to see Buffalo get 6 of those goals, but in hindsight maybe it shouldn’t have been. Edmonton has teased us for years with all that young talent, but every time you think they’re about to get over the hump, they seem to come crashing back down.
It was one bad game, and Oilers coach Todd McLellan has already made it clear it won’t be accepted again. He even cancelled a collective bargaining agreement-mandated day off on Monday so the team could practice instead. McLellan seems to be a really good fit in Edmonton – he won’t take any crap, and that type of inconsistency and lack of commitment seems to have been an issue in Edmonton for years.
Small NHL betting board tonight with just 4 games to choose from. If you’re thinking the Rangers look like a good home underdog bet at +125 odds, just be aware that Henrik Lundqvist isn’t starting tonight. (Might make for a decent Over bet instead.)
We’re going with 2 other games for our bets tonight. Good luck.

We’ve bet the Bruins Over in each of their first 2 games, winning the first one and then losing the second despite there being 4 goals scored in the first period Saturday night. We’ll go back to it at least one more time as Patrice Bergeron, one of the best defensive forwards in the league, remains out of the lineup and the blue line is still banged up.
Winnipeg has played two high-scoring games to start the year as well, winning its opener 5-4 and then losing 4-3 in Minnesota Saturday. In spite of that, the Jets are looking to generate more offence after firing just 8 shots on net in the last two periods versus Minnesota. Usually it seems that when teams play a few high-scoring games, coaches try to tighten things up and improve their defence. So if the talk in Winnipeg is about getting some more shots on net, that could mean a bit less focus on play in their own end as well.
The NHL has been high scoring in general this year, as defensive intensity doesn’t seem to be very high yet. We’ll hope the Over train continues in this one at plus money.

Final home opener for the Wings at Joe Louis Arena, and the Senators defence hasn’t exactly been a Rubik’s cube so far this year (7 goals against in 2 games). At 0-2, Detroit should be even more desperate for a victory and we like their chances of breaking down Ottawa for 3+ goals tonight.
(We posted this pick earlier in the day on Twitter, when the Wings were -135 at Bodog and -139 at Pinnacle. The line’s moved a bit on Detroit since then, although you can still catch -142 at BetOnline.)
