NHL Betting Tips For Tuesday, January 19

jon_derek (1)

We went 2-1 with our NHL betting tips yesterday, including a +130 winner on the Sabres in Arizona. Our other victory came on the Over 5 in the Penguins/Blues game, which St. Louis won 5-2. That was one of the best games we’ve watched this season, a lot of great back-and-forth action.

Our loss came on the Sharks, who lost to the Senators in a shootout. We’re glad we played San Jose on the -1 puck line at plus money, rather than laying -165 on them to win the game. Like we said yesterday, with so many games going to OT and shootouts these days, we’re really hesitant to lay the big price with a heavy favourite so we try to find alternate ways to reduce our risk.

There’s 8 games to choose from on tonight’s NHL betting board. We leaned towards tipping the Flyers to extend the Leafs’ latest slump, but Philly plays a ton of 1-goal games so we weren’t eager to pay -140 or higher on the Flyers in case the Leafs squeak one out. We were also looking towards the Over 5.5 in Washington/Columbus, but it turns out Holtby is playing tonight for the Caps. Tampa Bay over Edmonton was also tempting but the Lightning is more than a 2:1 favourite and 14 of their 24 wins are by 1 goal, so we didn’t see value in playing them -1 or -1.5.

We did, however, pick 3 other games for today’s NHL betting tips. Good luck with whatever you play tonight!

Odds below are at the time we made the pick. Be sure to check out our live odds page for updated odds on today’s games.

VS Pick
Game: Bruins @ Canadiens
Time: 7:30PM ET
Pick: Canadiens -115 (Bet365)

Not many are in a hurry to bet on Montreal these days, since the Habs have just 5 wins since the start of December. They’ve been the worst team in the NHL during that span, and instead of contending for first place in the East, they’re now battling for a playoff spot.

But nothing brings out the best in Montreal more than facing the Bruins. One of those 5 wins came on New Year’s Day in Boston, when the Canadiens pounded their rivals 5-1 in the Winter Classic. Montreal’s also won 13 of the last 15 regular-season meetings between these teams. Also, the Canadiens are playing better recently than their record suggests, including a 4-3 loss in St. Louis Saturday when they outshot the Blues 49-22.

Boston’s won 2 in a row, but the B’s are still 4-8 in their last 12. They’re also without Krejci. We like Montreal’s chances tonight.

VS Pick
Game: Blackhawks @ Predators
Time: 7:00PM ET
Pick: Predators +102 (Pinnacle)

It’s not often we’ll stand in the way of a team on a 11-game winning streak, but there’s a ton of value on the Predators tonight. They’ve been favoured the last 3 times they’ve hosted the Blackhawks, and now they’re a home dog. That’s a big deal when you consider how easily they’ve handled Chicago recently in Nashville, outscoring the Blackhawks 16-5 in the last 3 games there.

We don’t expect it to be that easy tonight, the way Chicago’s been rolling. But the Blackhawks are overvalued right now. They’ve outshot their opponent just 1 time in their last 5 games, and Nashville outshot Chicago 43-23 just one week ago in the Windy City.

The Preds snapped a 5-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Minnesota on Saturday night, and they’re always up for this division rival. We’ll take our chances at plus money here and hope we don’t regret stepping in front of the Chicago freight train.
